What a Hybrid Fire grill does
Kalamazoo is based in Michigan and builds its grills there. The defining product is the Hybrid Fire Grill, which can cook on gas, on charcoal, on wood, or on a combination. Gas burners sit low in the firebox, and a drawer or basket above them holds charcoal or wood. You can use gas alone like a normal grill, use the burners to light charcoal or wood fast, or run wood and charcoal as the main fuel.
That flexibility is the appeal, and it also means a Kalamazoo gets dirtier in more ways than a typical gas grill. You've got grease, plus ash, plus wood and charcoal residue, all in the same box. Kalamazoo also makes the Artisan Fire pizza oven and outdoor kitchen cabinetry, and we service those too.
What we run into
- Ash buildup. Ash left in the firebox mixes with grease and moisture and becomes a corrosive paste. It's the biggest maintenance issue we see on hybrid grills.
- Burners and ignition. Burners that run under charcoal and wood take more abuse than burners in a gas-only grill. Ports clog with ash, and ignition electrodes get crusted.
- Grates and drawers. Warped or encrusted cooking grates, and fuel drawers that stick from residue.
- Hood and stainless. Smoke staining and tarnish on the hood and front panel.
If your grill won't light or the gas flame looks weak, see low flame and weak heat.
How we clean a Kalamazoo
First the ash comes out, dry, with a vacuum and scraper. Then the grates and fuel drawer or basket come out and get scraped and degreased. Burners are removed, ports cleared, and the firebox is cleaned down to bare stainless. We check each burner and ignition point under gas before reassembly. The exterior stainless is cleaned and polished with the grain. If you smoke on your Kalamazoo often, a mid-season ash cleanout between full services makes a real difference. Our smoker maintenance guide has more tips that apply to hybrid cooking.
Parts
Kalamazoo sells parts directly, and they're specific to its grills; generic substitutes generally aren't a good fit here. We'll identify what's needed on the first visit and help you order or source it. Kalamazoo grills last a long time when maintained, so repair almost always makes more sense than replacement.
Kalamazoo questions
How often should a Kalamazoo be cleaned?
If you cook with wood or charcoal regularly, empty the ash after every few cooks and get a full service at least once a year. Gas-only use can stretch a bit longer.
Can you clean the Artisan Fire pizza oven too?
Yes. We clean outdoor pizza ovens and check burners and ignition. See how to clean an outdoor pizza oven.
Are you a Kalamazoo service center?
No. Surefire is an independent, insured grill company. Warranty questions go to Kalamazoo directly.
Will cleaning remove the seasoning I want on my grates?
We clean off carbon and grease buildup, not a healthy seasoning layer. Tell us how you like your grates and we'll work accordingly.
