Four floors up, two blocks from the water

A lot of grills in Manhattan Beach never touch the ground. In the Sand Section, lots are narrow, the houses go up instead of out, and the grill usually ends up on a roof deck or a top-floor terrace where the view is. That's a great place to cook and a rough place for stainless. The deck catches every bit of onshore breeze, and that breeze carries salt.

We've hauled degreaser, drop cloths and burner sets up plenty of interior staircases and spiral stairs to reach those decks. It takes a little planning (where to park on a walk street, which door to use, whether there's an elevator), and we'll ask about it when you book so nobody is surprised on the day.

What we tend to find, section by section

The city is small, but the grills change a lot as you move east from the Strand.

Keeping a beach grill alive longer

The grills that last here have a few things in common. Their owners cover them, but only once the grill is cool and dry, because a cover over a damp grill traps salt and moisture against the metal. They get cleaned at least once a year, and twice if they're within a few blocks of the sand. And small problems like a sticky knob or one weak burner get looked at before they turn into a seized valve.

Our salt air guide covers what you can do between visits, and if you're shopping for a new grill, picking a grill for a coastal home explains why the grade of stainless matters this close to the ocean.

Questions from Manhattan Beach customers

Parking on my walk street is impossible. How does that work?

We'll look at your address ahead of time and usually park on the nearest drivable street or alley. Tell us if there's a garage or alley spot we can use, and roughly how far the grill is from it.

Can you service a grill on a roof deck without damaging the decking?

Yes. We lay down drop cloths and mats under the work area and set parts on protected surfaces, not directly on composite or wood decking.

My grill is less than three years old and already rusting. Is that normal?

It's common this close to the water, especially with grills that use lower-grade stainless on the hardware or heat plates. Often it's surface rust that cleans up. We'll tell you which parts are cosmetic and which need replacing.

What will it cost?

That depends on the grill's size, brand and condition, and on whether parts are needed. Call or text us, or send a couple of photos, and we'll give you a quote.
