San Marino is almost entirely single-family homes on generous lots, and a good share of them have serious outdoor kitchens: a premium built-in grill, often with an infrared sear zone or rotisserie, plus side burners, a warming drawer, an outdoor refrigerator and sometimes a pizza oven. Many were installed fifteen or twenty years ago and still look fine from across the lawn.

Up close is another story. The rotisserie motor hasn't turned in years. A side burner lost its spark and nobody noticed because it only gets used at Thanksgiving. The grill's lights burned out, the knobs have faded, and the stainless along the hood has a dull brown haze from summers of heat and sprinklers. None of it is dramatic. It just adds up until the grill isn't something you'd want to cook on in front of guests.

Premium grills from the early 2000s were well made, but parts dry up. When a valve manifold fails on a grill whose maker stopped supporting it, repair can stop making sense. Many properties here have careful landscaping right up against the island: boxwood hedges, roses, lawn that someone maintains every week. Our degreasers are biodegradable and non-toxic, drop cloths go down before anything is taken apart, and we capture the rinse water and haul it away instead of flushing it into the beds.
