MalibuGrill Cleaning & BBQ Repair

Grills in Malibu take more abuse than almost anywhere else in Los Angeles. We drive the coast to clean, repair and replace them where they sit, from beachfront decks to ridge-top patios.

Spray, not mist

Most coastal neighborhoods deal with salt that drifts in on the marine layer. On a Malibu beachfront lot, the grill is often close enough to the surf line to catch actual spray on a windy afternoon. That changes how fast things go wrong. Hood seams start to bloom with rust, the bezels behind the knobs corrode, and the stainless takes on a brown film that a sponge won't touch. Igniter electrodes are usually the first part to fail, because salt crusts the tip and the spark jumps to the wrong place or doesn't jump at all.

A grill on Carbon Beach, Broad Beach or in the Colony is on a different schedule from one up in Malibu Park or off Latigo Canyon. We set the cleaning interval by where the grill actually lives, not by a calendar someone printed for the whole county. Our salt air guide goes into the chemistry if you want it.

Three kinds of Malibu grill

Twenty-plus miles of coastline covers a lot of ground. Roughly, this is what we find in each setting.

SettingWhat we usually seeHow often to service
Beachfront decks (Carbon, Broad Beach, the Colony, Malibu Road)Heavy salt crust, corroded igniters and knobs, pitted grates, hood hinges that stickEvery 3 to 4 months if you cook regularly
Bluffs and terraces (Point Dume, Malibu Riviera, Big Rock)Salt staining with wind-blown dust and plant debris, wind blowing out burnersTwice a year
Canyons and ridges (Malibu Park, Serra Retreat, the canyon roads)Less salt, more rodents and spiders, ash and dust after fire seasonOnce or twice a year, plus a check after a fire nearby

Getting to you

We cover Malibu from the Palisades line out past Point Dume and Zuma to the Ventura County line, plus the canyon roads off PCH. Gated drives, long private roads and beach access through a side gate are all routine. Tell us when you book if there's a code, a guard, or a particular place to park, and we'll plan the visit around PCH traffic.

Beach properties get extra attention to cleanup. Rinse water and grease are caught and carried off, not hosed onto the sand or into a drain that empties into the ocean a few yards away. More on that on our eco-friendly cleaning page.

Malibu questions

Should I keep my grill covered on a beachfront deck?

Yes, but use a vented cover and take it off to let the grill dry after foggy stretches. A sealed cover trapping salty moisture can do more harm than no cover. Our cover guide explains why.

My igniter clicks but nothing lights. Is that salt?

Very often. Salt and grease build up on the electrode and the spark goes to ground somewhere else. Sometimes a cleaning fixes it, sometimes the electrode needs replacing. We carry common igniter parts on the truck.

Do you service vacation homes when the owner isn't there?

Yes. If someone can give us gate access and point us to the grill, we'll send photos and notes when we're done.

What does service cost in Malibu?

It depends on the grill's size, brand, condition and whatever parts it needs. Call or text, or send a couple of photos, and we'll give you a quote.
