TopangaGrill Cleaning & BBQ Repair

Canyon grills live with oak leaves, wildlife and long gaps between cookouts. We come up the canyon to clean and fix them, along with smokers, fire pits and the propane setups that run a lot of them.

Life up the canyon

Topanga doesn't look like the rest of the Westside, and the grills don't either. You'll find a stainless built-in on one property and a battered offset smoker and a wood-fired oven on the next. Many homes run on propane tanks rather than a natural gas line, which means regulators, tank connections and long hose runs that deserve a look every so often.

The other constant is wildlife. A grill under the oaks off Fernwood or out toward Saddle Peak is a warm, sheltered box that smells like food, so mice and woodrats nest in it, spiders build webs inside the burner tubes, and squirrels chew wiring for the igniter and lights. None of that is unusual here. It just means the first thing we do on a Topanga call is open everything up and look.

Signs something has moved in

If you notice any of these, don't keep trying to light it.

  • Shredded paper, insulation or leaves under the grates or in the cabinet
  • Droppings in the drip tray or on the heat plates
  • Flames that are yellow, lazy or uneven across one burner
  • Fire coming out near the knobs instead of along the burner
  • An igniter that stopped working all at once
  • A gas smell at the tank, hose or valves

A flame coming back toward the front panel usually means a spider web or nest is blocking the venturi tube, so gas is burning where it shouldn't. That can melt knobs and wiring, and it's the main reason we ask people not to keep cranking. Our guides on spiders in burner tubes and rodents in grills explain what's going on.

Getting up there

Topanga Canyon Boulevard is the main way in from PCH or the Valley, and it closes now and then for slides. Many properties sit up steep dirt drives or have no cell signal once you're there. Give us clear directions when you book, mention any gates or dogs, and tell us if the drive is too steep for a work van. We'll carry gear in if we have to. Everything comes back out with us, including the grease and rinse water, so none of it ends up in the creek. Our eco-friendly approach matters more in a watershed like this one.

Questions we get from Topanga

Can you convert my grill from propane to natural gas?

If your property has a natural gas line, many grills can be converted with the right orifices and regulator. Some models can't be converted safely. We'll check yours and tell you. See gas conversion.

Do you work on wood or charcoal smokers?

Yes. We clean out grease and ash, check doors and seals, and look at anything that's rusted through.

How do I keep rodents out once it's clean?

Clean it after you cook so there's less to attract them, close up gaps in the cabinet, and run the grill hot for a few minutes before each cook. We can point out entry spots while we're there.

Do you charge more for canyon properties?

Pricing depends on the grill, its condition and the parts it needs. Call or text, or send a couple of photos, and we'll quote the job.
