BBQ Grill Cleaning in Los Angeles

We take your grill apart on the patio, clean every part that touches heat or grease, and put it back together working better than it did this morning. Built-ins stay in the island. The grease and rinse water leave with us.

A scrape is not a cleaning

Brushing the grates after a cook keeps the food from sticking. It does nothing for what's underneath. Below the grates, grease and carbon build up on the heat plates, drip into the firebox and settle in the grease tray. Spiders build webs in the burner venturis. Ash and leaves blow in during Santa Ana season. After a year or two, that layer is thick enough to cause flare-ups, uneven heat and burners that light slowly or not at all.

A professional cleaning goes after all of it. We pull every removable part, clean the firebox down to bare metal where we can, clear the burner ports, and check the ignition while it's all apart. Most grills come back cooking hotter and more evenly, simply because the burners can breathe again. If you want to see exactly what we do and why, our guide to what happens during a professional cleaning walks through it in detail.

What's included in a full cleaning

  • Cooking grates degreased and scrubbed (stainless, cast iron or porcelain, each handled the way it should be)
  • Heat plates, flavorizer bars or ceramic briquette trays removed and cleaned
  • Burners pulled, ports cleared, venturi tubes checked for spider webs and debris
  • Firebox scraped and degreased, including the back wall and under the burners
  • Grease tray, drip pan and grease path cleared so drippings go where they should
  • Warming rack, rotisserie spit and smoker box cleaned if present
  • Hood interior scraped of flaking carbon
  • Igniters and electrodes cleaned and tested
  • Exterior stainless wiped down and polished with the grain
  • Test fire on every burner, with flame color and height checked
  • A short written note on anything worn, cracked or close to failing

How the visit goes

A typical cleaning runs a couple of hours depending on size and how long it's been. You don't need to be standing there, but we'll walk you through what we found at the end.

  1. 1

    Set up and shut off

We lay drop cloths around the grill and on any nearby counters, close the gas supply at the grill, and let everything cool if it was used recently.

  2. 2

    Tear down

Grates, heat plates, burners, grease tray and any accessories come out. We look at each part as it comes out, because this is when cracked burners, rusted-through heat plates and chewed wiring show up.

  3. 3

    Degrease and scrub

Parts get soaked and scrubbed with biodegradable, food-safe degreasers and hot water. The firebox is scraped and degreased in place. Steam goes on the stubborn carbon where it helps.

  4. 4

    Clear the gas path

Burner ports are cleared one by one, venturi tubes brushed out, and the valve orifices checked for blockages. This is the part that fixes most weak or yellow flames.

  5. 5

    Reassemble and test

Everything goes back in the right order and orientation. We reconnect the gas, check connections for leaks, light every burner and watch the flame.

  6. 6

    Clean up and report

Wastewater and grease are collected and taken with us. We polish the exterior and tell you what we saw, including anything that needs attention soon.

Signs your grill is overdue

  • Flare-ups every time you cook, even with lean food
  • One side cooks much hotter than the other
  • Yellow, lazy flames instead of blue ones with a little orange at the tips
  • Black flakes falling from the inside of the hood onto your food
  • A smell of old grease when the grill heats up
  • The igniter clicks but takes several tries to catch
  • Grease dripping out the bottom of the grill or onto the island

Most households in LA do well with a professional cleaning once a year. Heavy grillers, coastal homes and rentals usually want two. Our guide on how often to clean a grill breaks it down by use.

What a cleaning doesn't cover

A cleaning fixes problems caused by dirt and grease. It won't fix a burner that has rusted through, a gas valve that sticks, or an ignition module that has died. If we find something like that, we'll tell you what it is and what it would take, and in many cases we carry the part on the truck and can do the repair the same visit if you want it. That work falls under grill repair.

Deep rust, heavy pitting on the exterior stainless and grills that have been neglected for many years often need more than a cleaning. That's what restoration is for. We also don't clean the island itself (tile, stone or stucco), though we'll wipe the countertop around the grill.

Grills and brands we clean

We clean built-in and freestanding gas grills from just about every manufacturer: Lynx, Viking, DCS, Fire Magic, Wolf, Twin Eagles, Alfresco, Hestan, Weber, Napoleon and others. Infrared burners, rear rotisserie burners and sear zones get their own treatment, since infrared ceramics can crack if they're scrubbed or soaked the wrong way. We also clean smokers, flat-tops and pizza ovens; see that service page for details.

Grill cleaning questions

Do I need to be home?

Not necessarily. If we can get to the grill and the gas shutoff, you can leave a gate code or let us in and go about your day. We'll text you photos and a summary when we're done.

Is the degreaser safe for food and pets?

Yes. The products we use are biodegradable and food-safe, and everything is rinsed before the grill goes back together. Keep pets away from the work area while we're there, mostly so they don't walk through the drop cloths.

Will you clean a grill that hasn't been used in years?

Yes, and those are often the most satisfying. Expect it to take longer, and expect us to find a few parts that need replacing. We'll show you before we replace anything.

Can you clean infrared burners?

Yes, carefully. Infrared ceramic panels shouldn't be soaked or scrubbed hard. We burn them off, brush them gently and check for cracks.

How long does the grill need before I can cook on it?

You can cook on it as soon as we leave. We test fire every burner before we pack up, which also burns off any moisture.

Do you clean the grill's exterior and the island?

We clean and polish the grill's exterior stainless. We wipe down the countertop around it, but we don't deep-clean tile, stone or grout on the island.

What does a cleaning cost?

It depends on the grill's size, brand and condition, and whether there are extras like a side burner or rotisserie. Call or text us, or send a couple of photos, and we'll give you a quote.
