A short history that matters for repairs
Viking Range started in Greenwood, Mississippi in the late 1980s and became one of the names that defined the pro-style home kitchen. The outdoor grills came along as matching pieces, and plenty of LA homes have a Viking range inside and a Viking grill in the island. The company was later bought by a large commercial kitchen equipment group, and the outdoor lineup has changed more than once since.
That history is why Viking repairs split into two groups. Newer grills, like the 5 Series and 7 Series, have parts that are generally obtainable. Older Viking built-ins, many of them 15 to 25 years old now, are where things get interesting. Some original burners, valves and igniter assemblies are discontinued, and the fix becomes a matter of finding the right equivalent part.
What we run into on older Vikings
- Rusted-through burners. After many years of grease and moisture, burners crack or rot near the ports. Aftermarket burners are made to fit many older Viking grills.
- Ignition that quit. Spark modules, wires and electrodes wear out. Sometimes we replace the original part, and sometimes a universal module is the practical answer.
- Sticky valves. Knobs that are hard to turn or don't shut down smoothly usually mean a valve that needs service or replacement. See gas valve replacement.
- Infrared rotisserie burners. Many Vikings have a rear infrared rotisserie burner (Viking called it Gourmet-Glo). The ceramic face cracks with age and water exposure.
- Hood and handle wear. Heavy hoods, tired springs and loose handles. Our hood and hinge repair page covers it.
Cleaning a Viking
Viking grills are deep and heavy, and grease tends to collect in the back corners of the firebox and around the rotisserie burner. We pull grates, heat shields and burners, scrape and degrease the firebox, clear burner ports, and empty and clean the grease path so it drains where it should. The infrared rotisserie burner is cleaned dry, never soaked. Our degreasers are biodegradable, and dirty rinse water leaves with us instead of going onto your patio. Details at grill cleaning.
Parts: OEM, equivalent, or replace
For newer Vikings, we order original parts when they're available. For older ones, we'll walk you through the options: an original part if one still exists, a well-made equivalent that fits, or, if the grill has several failing systems, a replacement grill matched to your island cutout. We're a dealer and can supply and install a new built-in. The guides on discontinued parts and OEM vs. universal parts explain the tradeoffs.
Viking questions
Can you still get parts for my 20-year-old Viking?
Often. Burners, grates and ignition parts that fit many older Viking grills are still made, though not always by Viking. We'll confirm what's available before we schedule the repair.
Is a universal part safe on a Viking?
A properly sized burner or ignition part fitted by a tech is fine. We don't improvise on gas valves or regulators; those have to be the correct part.
Do you handle Viking warranty work?
No. We're independent and not a Viking service center. If your grill is under warranty, contact Viking first.
Where's the model number on a Viking grill?
It's on a rating plate, usually somewhere under or behind the front of the grill or inside a drawer or door on carts. Our model number guide lists the common spots.
