Why the model number matters so much
Jenn-Air outdoor grills have come from more than one era and, over the years, from more than one manufacturer. A Jenn-Air cart grill from a home center and an older Jenn-Air built-in might share a name and little else. Burners, igniters and grates differ between them.
That's why the first thing we'll ask for is the model and serial number. With it, we can tell which generation you have and what parts fit. Without it, we're guessing, and guessing on grill parts usually means a second trip. Our model and serial guide covers where to look; on carts, check inside the cabinet doors and on the back of the cart, and on built-ins, look under the control panel or with the drip tray removed.
Common Jenn-Air repairs
- Ignition. Push-button or rotary igniters that stop sparking, often from a dead battery, a loose wire or a worn electrode. See igniter replacement.
- Burners and heat tents. Rusted burners and heat tents that have rotted through, especially on cart grills that sit uncovered. See heat plate replacement.
- Low flame on propane. Often a regulator in safety bypass. Our low flame page covers it.
- Grease fires from full drip trays.
- Side burners that stopped lighting.
Cleaning a Jenn-Air
We remove grates, heat tents and burners, clear ports and venturi tubes, and scrape and degrease the firebox with a biodegradable cleaner. The grease tray and catch pan get cleaned. On cart grills, we wipe out the cabinet, where grease drips and rodent nests often turn up. We test ignition and flame on every burner before putting things back. Drop cloths go down first, and dirty rinse water leaves with us. See BBQ grill cleaning.
Parts and when to replace
Parts for newer Jenn-Air cart grills are generally available, both original and universal. Parts for older built-ins can be harder to find. For burners, heat tents and grates, a properly sized universal part is often a good solution; our OEM vs. universal parts guide explains when that works. If the firebox or cart frame is rusted through, replacement usually makes more sense, and we can help you choose and install a new grill. See repair or replace.
For built-ins, a new grill can often go into the existing island cutout with little or no modification. We measure before recommending anything.
Jenn-Air questions
Is my Jenn-Air grill made by Whirlpool?
Jenn-Air is a Whirlpool brand, but many of its outdoor grills have been made by other manufacturers under the name. The model number tells us which.
Are you a Jenn-Air or Whirlpool service center?
No. We're an independent, insured grill company. Warranty questions go to the brand.
Can universal burners fit my Jenn-Air?
Often, yes, if they're the right size and style. We match by model and measurements.
My Jenn-Air side burner won't light. Can you fix it?
Usually. It's often a blocked burner, a dirty igniter or a valve issue. See side burner repair.
