What Napoleon is known for
Napoleon is based in Ontario and started in the 1970s in fireplaces and stoves before becoming a major grill brand. The main gas grill lines are Rogue (mid-range), Prestige and Prestige PRO (higher end), available as freestanding carts and built-in heads.
A few features come up a lot:
- Wave cooking grids with a distinctive S-shaped rod pattern.
- Infrared burners. Many models have an infrared side burner (Napoleon calls it the Sizzle Zone) and a rear infrared rotisserie burner.
- Jetfire ignition on many Prestige grills, which shoots a jet of flame to light each burner.
- Lighted knobs on higher-end models.
Napoleon also makes gas fireplaces, and we service outdoor fireplaces and fire features too.
Common Napoleon repairs
- Ignition. Jetfire or electronic ignition that stops lighting, usually from debris, a worn electrode, or a dead battery. See grill won't light.
- Infrared burners. Cracked ceramic faces from water exposure or age. Covered at infrared burner repair.
- Burners and flame tamers. Corrosion on older grills, especially in salt air.
- Grease tray and flare-ups. Loaded drip trays on grills that see a lot of use.
- Lighting on models with lit knobs.
Cleaning notes
On a full service, we remove grids, flame tamers and burners, clear ports, scrape and degrease the firebox, and clean the grease tray and drip path. Infrared side and rear burners get a dry cleaning and inspection, never a soak. We check ignition and flame on every burner before reassembly. Our degreasers are biodegradable and the rinse water is collected and removed. Freestanding carts get the cabinet interior cleaned too, since grease drips and rodents tend to end up there. See BBQ grill cleaning for the full process.
Parts and the rating label
Napoleon parts are widely available in the US for current and recent models. On many freestanding Napoleon grills the rating label is on the cart, often inside the cabinet door or on the back panel; on built-ins, look under the control panel area or with the drip tray removed. Our model and serial guide covers the usual spots.
Freestanding Napoleons on carts also deserve attention underneath. Hoses can rub or crack, and the regulator should be checked if the flame looks weak or uneven. Our regulator and hose page explains what to look for, and the soap test guide shows how to check connections yourself.
Spiders also like Napoleon venturi tubes, so a lazy yellow flame after a quiet winter is usually a quick fix.
Napoleon questions
Can you fix the Sizzle Zone infrared side burner?
Yes. If it lights unevenly or not at all, we inspect the burner, ignition and gas flow, and replace the burner if the ceramic is damaged.
Do you service Napoleon fireplaces too?
We service outdoor gas fireplaces and fire pits. See fireplace cleaning and repair.
Are you a Napoleon authorized service provider?
No. We're an independent, insured grill service company. Warranty claims go through Napoleon.
My Napoleon clicks but doesn't light. What should I check?
Replace the ignition battery if your model has one, make sure the gas is on, and check that the igniter tip isn't covered in grease. If it still won't light, call us.
