Playa del ReyGrill Cleaning & BBQ Repair

Playa del Rey grills live in wind, sand and salt spray, often all three on the same afternoon. We come to your patio, deck or condo balcony and clean, repair or replace what the beach has worn down.

Playa del Rey is a small Los Angeles neighborhood wedged between the Ballona Wetlands, the ocean and the bluffs that climb toward Westchester. There's not much flat inland buffer here. Most homes are a few blocks from the sand at most, and the afternoon onshore breeze is steady enough that anything left uncovered collects a gritty coating by evening.

That grit is the first thing we notice when we open a grill here. Fine sand works its way under the hood, settles into the grease on the heat plates and gets packed into the hinge and the knob shafts. Mixed with salt and a few months of cooking residue, it turns into a paste that holds moisture against stainless and cast parts. Burners rust from the outside in, and valves start to feel stiff or gritty when you turn them.

Lower Playa vs. the bluff

The neighborhood splits roughly in two, and the grills age differently.

Covers, wind and a few habits that help

A good cover helps in a place this windy, but only if it fits snugly and breathes. Loose covers flap, sand gets underneath, and the inside stays damp after foggy mornings. If yours has torn straps or a cracked liner, it may be doing more harm than good. We go into the trade-offs in our grill cover guide.

Between visits, burn the grill on high for ten minutes after cooking, brush the grates while they're hot, and wipe the hood down with fresh water every few weeks to get the salt off. Owners closest to the water should also read our coastal grill care notes.

If a grill on the bluff has finally rusted past the point of repair, we're a dealer and can fit a new built-in into your existing island. Picking one that holds up near the ocean is its own topic, covered in choosing a grill for a coastal home.

Questions we get in Playa del Rey

Why does my grill feel gritty when I turn the knobs?

Sand and salt get into the valve stems and harden with grease. Sometimes a cleaning and lubrication frees them up. If a valve is corroded inside, it needs to be replaced, and we'll tell you which it is.

Can you service a grill on a condo balcony near the lagoon?

Yes. We bring everything up, protect the balcony floor and take the waste water and grease away with us. Let us know about any building rules for elevators or work hours when you book.

My grill is only three years old and the burners are already rusting. Is that normal?

This close to the beach it happens, especially with lower-grade stainless or uncoated parts. Regular cleaning slows it down a lot. If the burners are already flaking, replacing them is usually straightforward.

How much does a visit cost?

That depends on the grill's size, brand and condition, and whether parts are needed. Call or text us, or send a couple of photos, and we'll give you a quote.
